There’s singing in an audition… And then there’s singing in a class for a Casting Director, ready to help you improve your technique and performance in the room where it happens! Get to hear from Merri Sugarman from Tara Rubin Casting, a casting veteran of Broadway, film and TV, how to make your Musical Theatre audition technique shine and your song count!
This class is open to intermediate and advanced musical theatre performers. No audition is necessary to register. Participants need to bring a 16-32 bar cut of an audition song (about 1 minute) either Musical Theatre or Pop. Participants will need to have an accompaniment track, ready to play! ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Initially an actress, Merri first made herself a name in casting on-screen in Los via TV shows including NewsRadio, The Larry Sanders Show and the film Playing By Heart, starring Sean Connery and Angelina Jolie. In 2000, Merri moved to Dreamworks Studios as the Casting Executive in charge of TV Pilots and Series, and then ABC Television before returning to the East Coast where she joined the team at Tara Rubin. Merri‘s Casting resume includes the Broadway, touring and international companies of Spamalot, Jersey Boys, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, How To Suceed… It Shoulda Been You,
School of Rock and Miss Saigon. She also casts for many theaters regionally including the Papermill Playhouse, Dallas Theater Center, The Old Globe and The LaJolla Playhouse. She is the very proud CD of the critically acclaimed web series Submissions Only and also boasts many TV & film projects, workshops and readings – including the new musical Trevor– based on the Oscar winning short film.

Your BAA application fee will be waived if you are interested in only attending One Day Master Classes. You will see the waiver option at the end of the Online Application (which you will still need to complete!)
Online One Day Master Classes are open to ages 10-25.
Class size is typically limited to 12 participants to ensure that each student receives personal attention from our special guest instructors. Enrollment will be closed when the class reaches capacity.

What you’ll need to have:
- An internet connection.
- A computer or connecting device with a camera.
- A secondary device in which to play your accompaniment track (for vocal sessions).
- A quiet space to connect from.
- A headset for when you are listening to other people perform or the instructor speak! (You can remove them when it is your turn to perform!)

How will it work?
- We will meet using ZOOM.
This is a free service you may already have. Please, download the latest version to guarantee a smooth connection and use of all the latest features. When creating your user name, please make sure it features the student’s NAME and/or LAST NAME so you can be easily and properly identified by the instructor. - Logging into your ZOOM class room.
You’ll receive a Zoom class room link before the start of the first session of your selected series. This will be the same link you’ll use every week to connect. - Only participants registered in the Master Class will be allowed in. So, reserve your spot in a timely manner!
- Your instructor will be accompanied by a BAA Staff member during each Master Class. The BAA staff member will supervise, address and help with any technical questions, and guarantee each performer gets equal work time with the instructor. During vocal classes, we will lead a warm up right before so everyone is ready to sing!
