Join us for a full day of Jagged Little Pill themed master classes and a special Q&A with Tony nominees Derek Klena and Kathryn Gallagher! With special focus on how to audition for and perform in contemporary, pop/rock productions, this workshop will leave students “Smiling” and prepared for a Broadway callback. Plus, students will get to hear directly from Derek and Kathryn about their careers and experience performing together in a groundbreaking new musical, and of course, advice on how to stay creative and productive during these times.

Nailing your Pop/Rock audition

 

This class is open to intermediate and advanced musical theatre performers. No audition is necessary to register. Participants need to bring a 16-32 bar cut of an audition song (about 1 minute) either Musical Theatre or Pop. Participants will need to have an accompaniment track, ready to play! MEET YOUR BROADWAY INSTRUCTORS:

DEREK KLENA 
Teaching: Song Interpretation and Cold Reading Technique (11:00am1:30pm ET)
Derek is now a Tony Nominee for his work in Jagged Little Pill, based on the same title album by Alanis Morrisette. His Broadway credits include Dmitry in Anastasia (Original Broadway Cast), The Bridges of Madison County (Original Broadway Cast) and Wicked (Fiyero). His Off-Broadway credits include Dogfight (Second Stage, Clive Barnes Award nomination) and Carrie (MCC). Regional performances include Anastasia (Hartford Stage), Diner (Signature Theatre, Delaware Theatre Company), Unknown Soldier (Williamstown Theatre Festival), Hairspray (Hollywood Bowl). He has also been part of TV’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Quantico, Blue Bloods, Law and Order: SVU and Carrie Diaries .

KATHRYN GALLAGHER:
Teaching: You Oughta Know: How to Nail Your Pop/Rock Audition Song! (2:30pm-5:00pm ET)
Kathryn is a Tony Nominee for her work in Jagged Little Pill. She made her Broadway debut as an ensemble member in Deaf West Theatre’s 2015 Broadway revival of Spring Awakening. She’s also a songwriter! Her song “Nothing Ever None” was featured on the soundtrack for the 2011 film Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You and her song “Damaged” appears on the 2012 film Thanks for Sharing‘s soundtrack. She has released four  EPs of her original music. Her third and fourth EPs, “Demos, Vol.1” and “Demos, Vol.2” she produced during the coronavirus pandemic. TV Credits include You (Lifetime) and The Flash and Indoor Boys.

Online One Day Master Classes are open to ages 10-25.
Class size is typically limited to 12 participants to ensure that each student receives personal attention from our special guest instructors. Enrollment will be closed when the class reaches capacity.

The basics about BAA online classes:

What you’ll need to have:

  • An internet connection.
  • A computer or connecting device with a camera.
  • A secondary device in which to play your accompaniment track (for vocal sessions).
  • A quiet space to connect from.
  • A headset for when you are listening to other people perform or the instructor speak! (You can remove them when it is your turn to perform!)

How will it work?

  • We will meet using ZOOM.
    This is a free service you may already have. Please, download the latest version to guarantee a smooth connection and use of all the latest features. When creating your user name, please make sure it features the student’s NAME and/or LAST NAME so you can be easily and properly identified by the instructor.
  • Logging into your ZOOM class room. 
    You’ll receive a Zoom class room link before the start of the first session of your selected series. This will be the same link you’ll use every week to connect.
  • Only participants registered in the Master Class will be allowed in. So, reserve your spot in a timely manner!
  • Your instructor will be accompanied by a BAA Staff member during each Master Class. The BAA staff member will supervise, address and help with any technical questions, and guarantee each performer gets equal work time with the instructor. During vocal classes, we will lead a warm up right before so everyone is ready to sing!
