Below you will find all details regarding our Virtual Auditions via Zoom as well as the materials you’d need to prepare by program of interest and/or by major (if applicable). Please review the requirements and information below carefully and, let us know if you have any questions. .IN-PERSON and LIVE ZOOM AUDITIONS, STEP BY STEP:

  1. All prospective students and returning alumni must complete the yearly Online Application, including its $25 yearly fee to audition or re-audition for the 2023-2024 season of programs.
  2. Once you have submitted your Online Application, you can sign-up for the audition of your choice via our Auditions Sign-Up Page. You will be contacted by our Director of Auditions and/BAA team to give you more information about your appointment. Audition dates are announced in each Fall.
  3. Below, you will see a list of audition requirements by program and major (where applicable). Please prepare the appropriate material for your audition.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS BY PROGRAM:

Summer Sessions and Winter Workshop in-person audition requirements (Majors based programs):

In BAA's Major-based programs students choose attend in one of three Majors: Voice, Acting, or Dance. The major determines your focus and what you will perform for your final industry showcase (Voice Majors perform a short musical theatre selection, Acting Majors perform a short monologue, and Dance Majors perform a short solo theatre dance combination). You may audition for and be accepted into multiple Majors, but you will eventually declare only one Major per program you attend. And, yes: you will have the opportunity to choose Elective classes in all three specialties still to improve your triple threat skills. Find below what you need to prepare for your audition in the major(s) of your choice:
Please prepare:
  • Two contrasting 16 – 32 bar musical theatre selections (one of the two pieces may be a pop-rock selection) that demonstrate vocal range, musicianship, and performance skills. No a cappella singing, please. Please bring your sheet music if you are attending an in-person audition (no exceptions). If you are attending a Zoom audition, have your accompaniment ready to play.
  • We will be looking to see that you’ve addressed the following questions with your song interpretation:
    • Character: Who am I?
    • Other/Scene Partner: Who am I talking to?
    • Objective: What do I want?
    • Tactics: What are the things I am doing during my song to get what I want?
    • Moment Before: What happened just now that prompted me to start singing?
    • Stakes: How important is what I want? What will happen if I don’t get it?
    • Environment: Where am I? In what time period does this piece take place?
  • Regarding your music accompaniment:
    • In-Person Auditions: Please bring your sheet music, clearly marked for the accompanist. If you have a “book” or three ring binder of audition material, feel free to bring that as well. No transposition, lead sheets, CD tracks or a cappella singing please.
    • Zoom Auditions: Please have an accompaniment track ready to play on your end of the call. Piano only tracks are preferred, but we will accept orchestrated karaoke tracks.
  • In-person auditions mandatory dance call: All Voice Majors are required to participate in a group dance call and should bring dance wear or comfortable clothing as well as jazz shoes or dance sneakers to their audition. Voice Majors will have the option of learning a beginning theatre dance combination, an intermediate/advanced theatre dance combination, or both. If a Voice Major has tap experience, they may be asked to learn a tap combination time permitting.
  • If you wish to be considered for Voice AND Acting: prepare at least one 16 – 32 bar musical theatre selection AND one 1-minute monologue (see Acting specifications below). The audition panel may request to see only part of these materials at the audition. You may also be asked to do a cold-reading of a scene with a member of the audition panel. Sides will be provided on the audition day.
  • If you wish to be considered for Voice AND Dance: prepare two 16 – 32 bar musical theater selections and also learn the advanced theatre dance combination during your in-person audition. (For Zoom auditions, follow the dance major requirements in the video audition tab. You'll receive an email with more details if this is your case!)
Please prepare:
  • Two contrasting 1-minute monologues that demonstrate acting range, characterization, and performance skills. We recommend contemporary, age appropriate monologues, and at least one of your selections should be comedic. Monologues may be taken from contemporary plays and/or monologue books. Solo material only; we will NOT be able to accept scene work as audition material.
  • We will be looking to see that you’ve addressed the following questions with your monologue interpretation:
    • Character: Who am I?
    • Other/Scene Partner: Who am I talking to?
    • Objective: What do I want?
    • Tactics: What are the things I am doing during my monologue to get what I want?
    • Moment Before: What happened just now that prompted me to start speaking?
    • Stakes: How important is what I want? What will happen if I don’t get it?
    • Environment: Where am I? In what time period does this piece take place?
  • In-person auditions mandatory dance call: All Acting Majors are required to participate in a group dance call and should bring dance wear or comfortable clothing as well as jazz shoes or dance sneakers to their audition. Acting Majors will have the option of learning a beginning theatre dance combination, an intermediate/advanced theatre dance combination, or both. If An acting Major has tap experience, they may be asked to learn a tap combination time permitting.
  • If you wish to be considered for Acting AND Voice: prepare at least one 16 – 32 bar musical theatre selection AND one 1-minute monologue (see Voice specifications above). The audition panel may request to see only part of these materials at the audition.
  • If you wish to be considered for Acting AND Dance: prepare two 1-minute monologues, and also learn the advanced theatre dance combination during your in-person audition. (For Zoom auditions, follow the dance major requirements in the video audition tab. You'll receive an email with more details if this is your case!)
  • Dance Majors will demonstrate technique, flexibility, characterization, and musicality by learning advanced theatre dance combinations (on-site) and performing them for the audition panel in small groups. Dancers should bring form-fitting dance attire, jazz shoes or sneakers, character shoes, and tap shoes (if they have tap experience).
  • We will be looking for dancers who have a strong sense of story telling through movement. Give some thought to the character you are playing and use your choreography to express what that character wants and how they are trying to accomplish their goal.
  • Dance Majors should arrive warmed up and ready to dance.
  • If a student wishes to be considered for Dance AND Voice, they may learn the advanced theatre dance combinations and also prepare two 16 – 32 bar musical theater selections. (See Voice specifications above). The audition panel may request to see only part of these materials at the audition.
  • If a student wishes to be considered for Dance AND Acting, they may learn the advanced theatre dance combinations and also prepare two 1-minute monologues (see Acting specifications above). The audition panel may request to see only part of these materials at the audition. You may also be asked to do a cold-reading of a scene with a member of the audition panel. Sides will be provided on the audition day.

In person and live Zoom audition requirements for non-majors programs:

BAA Junior Track students do not declare majors but explore voice, acting and dance work in their classes. To be considered for this program, students must prepare the following material:
  • One 16 – 32 bar musical theater selection that demonstrate vocal range, musicianship, and performance skills. No a cappella singing, please. Please bring your sheet music if you are attending an in-person audition (no exceptions). If you are attending a Zoom audition, have your accompaniment ready to play.
  • One 1-minute contemporary monologue that demonstrate acting range, characterization, and performance skills. Your monologue may be taken from contemporary plays or a monologue book.
  • Regarding your music accompaniment:
    • In-Person Auditions: Please bring your sheet music, clearly marked for the accompanist. If you have a “book” or three ring binder of audition material, feel free to bring that as well. No transposition, lead sheets, CD tracks or a cappella singing please.
    • Zoom Auditions: Please have an accompaniment track ready to play on your end of the call. Piano only tracks are preferred, but we will accept orchestrated karaoke tracks.
  • In-person and live Zoom auditions mandatory dance call: All students are required to participate in a group dance call if your audition date is scheduled to hold one. Please, bring dance wear or comfortable clothing as well as jazz shoes or dance sneakers to their audition. You will have the option of learning a beginning theatre dance combination, an intermediate/advanced theatre dance combination, or both.
College Audition Workshop students do not declare Majors, but will explore material they can use to audition for Musical Theatre/Vocal Performance degree programs. To be considered for this program, participants must prepare the following options for their audition:
  • Two 16 – 32 bar musical theater selections that demonstrate vocal range, musicianship, and performance skills. No a cappella singing, please. Please bring your sheet music if you are attending an in-person audition (no exceptions). If you are attending a Zoom audition, have your accompaniment ready to play.
  • A 1-minute contemporary monologue that demonstrates acting range, characterization, and performance skills. Your monologue MUST be taken from a published play. Solo material only; we will NOT be able to accept scene work as audition material.
    • We will be looking to see that you’ve addressed the following questions with your audition selections:
    • Character: Who am I?
    • Other/Scene Partner: Who am I talking to?
    • Objective: What do I want?
    • Tactics: What are the things I am doing during my song/monologue to get what I want?
    • Moment Before: What happened just now that prompted me to start singing/speaking?

Weekly Class Series and BAA Conservatory students do not declare Majors, but will work on materials that is appropriative for the class topic of the day. To be considered for this program, participants must prepare the following options for their audition:
  • Two 16 – 32 bar musical theater selections that demonstrate vocal range, musicianship, and performance skills. No a cappella singing, please. Please bring your sheet music if you are attending an in-person audition (no exceptions). If you are attending a Zoom audition, have your accompaniment ready to play.
  • A 1-minute contemporary monologue that demonstrates acting range, characterization, and performance skills. Your monologue MUST be taken from a published play. Solo material only; we will NOT be able to accept scene work as audition material.
  • We will be looking to see that you’ve addressed the following questions with your audition selections:

but students interested in those programs only must still complete a yearly BAA Online Application.

IN-PERSON AUDITIONS FAQ:

The following BAA programs require auditions:
  • Summer Sessions One, Two, Three and Four
  • BAA Junior Track
  • All NYC Cabaret Weekend programs
  • Winter Workshop
  • College Audition Workshop
  • BAA Conservatory.
The Adult Professional Workshop, and One Day Master Classes do NOT require an audition.
Select BAA programs offer specific classes and showcase tracks in three majors: Voice, Acting and Dance. Students in the Winter Workshop, and Summer Sessions One through Four (excluding the Session one BAA Junior Track) will choose attend their program in one of three Majors: Voice, Acting, or Dance.
  • Your Major is your focus while you’re with us and it also determines what you will perform for your final industry showcase (Voice Majors perform a short musical theatre selection, Acting Majors perform a short monologue, and Dance Majors perform a short solo theatre dance combination).
  • You may audition for and be accepted into multiple Majors, but you will eventually declare only one Major per program you attend.
  • In addition to your Major classes, you will have the opportunity to choose Elective classes in Voice, Acting, or Dance to improve your triple threat skills.
Students in the BAA Junior Track do not attend in a specific major, but attend classes in voice, acting and dance. Students in the College Audition Workshops do not attend in a specific major, though they tailor their classes and material choices to the types of programs they want to attend. Students in the Adult Professional Workshop do not attend in a specific major and are encouraged to showcase song AND monologue skills. Each of these programs has its own specific audition guidelines, which are listed on this page.
When you complete your online application, you will be asked to indicate what programs and intensives you are interested in being a part of. This will be our guidance. Your acceptance information may match what you requested in your application, but it may look different as we look to place each student in the programs we feel are the best fit, and will offer them the best and most successful experience.
Admission to all Broadway Artists Alliance Audition-Only Intensives is competitive. Auditions will be scored and a prospective student must meet the minimum scoring requirement for each program to be accepted. Please note that some programs have different minimum scoring requirements, and Session Four is the most competitive session due to the format of the final showcase, which requires that we accept fewer students. Read the audition requirements for the program of your choice, to understand what we look for in every specific area.
You will receive an email within two weeks of your audition date, letting you know which intensives and majors you are eligible to attend based on your audition.
If you’re a BAA Alumnus who has attended an intensive in the past academic year, you will automatically receive an Alumni Admissions email in September, letting you know all of the intensives and majors you qualify for in the coming year without having to re-audition and giving you registration instructions. BAA Alumni only need to audition if you have not attended BAA in the past 2 school years, if you want to be considered for additional programs or majors to those you have received admission to, OR if you missed the Alumni Deposit Deadline listed in your letter. If you choose to audition via video, alumni video auditions should be submitted directly via email to: alumniauditions@broadwayartistsalliance.org
Because we have rolling admissions, we strongly recommend auditioning/submitting an audition video as early as possible in the season to increase your chances of being accepted.
The schedule of a BAA audition generally looks as follows:
  • 11:00am-12:00pm: Parent and student information session with the BAA Artistic Director
  • 12:00pm-1:00pm: Mandatory Dance Call with a guest Broadway artist (select dates only)
  • 1:00pm-3:00pm: Individual Voice/Acting appointments (These last between 5 and 10 minutes each)
You would be done after your individual Voice/Acting appointment is completed. Which means that if you signed up for an earlier time, you'd be done earlier!
Yes!
  • At this time we ask young performers to come accompanied only by one adult (parent/guardian) in order to guarantee proper distancing in the audition space! (Parents: siblings are permitted to be with you in the holding area if needed.)
  • Masks are mandatory, and should be worn during the length of your audition and dance call, regardless of your vaccination status. You'll only be allowed to remove your mask during your voice/acting individual appointment, where you'll be properly distanced to sing.
  • In order to be seen, participants and their parent/guarding must present either:
    • A negative Covid test result (test must be taken within 72 hours of the audition date.)
Your safety and the safety of the BAA team and guests instructors is of the utmost importance. Please note that no exceptions will be made to the safety protocols above.
Audition times are assigned by the BAA team in a first come, first served basis upon received your audition request! If you have specific schedule concerns or requests, please contact us upon receiving your audition appointment email. We'll do our best to adjust your individual audition time if needed, and if availability permits. If any cancellations occur, it's possible that the BAA team may offer to bump up your audition time closer to the audition date. If this is the case, we will contact you directly!
